After a few weeks of pretty heavy use, I'm *really* glad I bought it.It's inexpensive but, AFAICT (I haven't done an EEVBlog-style tear-down), not cheap. I've never used a really high-end soldering station so I can't comment on how this compares to one of those, but I'm upgrading from a Weller WPS18MP (which I was actually pretty happy with), and at the very least this is better than that was. Both the soldering iron and the hot air gun have a temperature range of 100 - 480. Desoldering with the hot air gun works well, and if you turn down the temperature it is great for heat-shrink, too. I haven't had any problems with either the hot air gun or the soldering iron. Bottom line: I think it's a really good value, and I don't have any regrets about buying it. See more product details |

Customer ReviewsI can't believe I soldered before having this. this plus solder paste is a very versatile tool. It makes it safer and faster to rework my messed up work and my new soldering more precise. I probably use this more than I should but the speed to heat up is fantastic.The solder tool knows when you have put it down and after an extended period will shut off. When you pick it back up, it turns back on. I have no idea what that power switch is for, it doesn't do anything that I can tell. When you are in between solder points put the tool on the rest and forget about it. the rest can be put on either side of the unit, I put it on the left because I put the unit on my right. The blower speed control is pretty good. The heat precision is good. Very fast heat up time. This thing will ask for almost all the current you can get out of a 15a 120v circuit. If you have it on a GFCI, it may trip it if there is significant parasitic draw on it. I couldn't plug it in with my coffee maker turned off, it kept tripping the GFCI. I usually have to plug this into a circuit I know is mostly inactive. I recommend putting it in a 20a circuit so this thing gets the current it needs. This station is particularly useful with the attached hot air gun, as I was able to shift very quickly from soldering to hot air to heat the shrink wrap over each of the 4 solder jobs. I've been servicing electronic gear for years and have wanted a hot air station but most of the stuff I work on dont need it and I couldnt justify the several hundred dollars for the ones I had been looking at. Then that one repair would come in where if I had one of these it would make my work so much easier. Then I saw this unit by mere chance on Amazon. $100? Really!? For that price, if the thing didnt work I at least got a power supply and another soldering station! I just got it about an hour ago and immediately flipped over a PC board in a Yamaha audio mixer Ive had in the shop for months. I had planned to rebuild it from a lightning strike but kept putting it off because I knew what a pain it was going to be to replace those components half the size of a grain of rice. My smallest soldering tip looked like a shovel next to those parts! I was surprised the soldering iron looked exactly like my Hako 900 stations! I suspect they are the same but cant make that statement for sure. I just know holding them side by side except for the brand name you cant tell them apart. I plugged everything up, turned it on, and didnt know what really to expect. Of course the soldering iron got hot, but nothing was going on with the hot air tool. The manual says it must be in the holder before you turn it on. Well, I did and nothing happened - until I lifted it out of the holder!!!! NOW I knew why you have to have the gun holstered before you turn on the power. Turns out there must be a magnetic switch that keeps the hot air tool off until you need it. That thing ran up to 325 degrees in less than 30 seconds or thereabouts. If you had it laying out on your workbench and turned the machine on, you'd have a burn mark in your table top before you realized it! See more product details |

This is quite a deal for the money. A soldering station with many of the features of much more expensive models. You can individually power on the soldering pencil, the hot air gun, and the power supply/voltmeter with their corresponding power switches in the front panel. The soldering pencil's temperature can be set up to 400 degrees with the use of a couple of pushbuttons. The hot air gun has a knob that allows you to set the amount of hot air that you want to come out of it. I have not yet made use of the power supply but I did try the built-in digital voltmeter. It is not the best meter, that's for sure. You will get no readings if your voltage is negative - something I found quite odd but then again, I didn't buy this to use as a voltmeter, I bought it to solder and that is something it does quite well. The soldering pencil gets hot really quick and it maintains its temperature nicely even when soldering long, thick wires or tinning pads with a large surface, which tend to act as a heatsink and are tough to solder. I ordered this item to repair small electronic devices for customers and family. It came well-packaged and was easy to set up and use. It performed wonderfully for the 2+ weeks of moderate to heavy use that we put it through. One day, just after replacing a charging port on a Kindle Fire, I heard a loud pop from the hot air wand. The temperature started to go down slowly, and after resting it on the stand I noticed that it wouldn't get above 48C-50C. I consulted the diagrams that came with it and other X-Tronic products and realized that the heat coil in the wand had broken. I called the number for X-Tronic on a Saturday and was met with a message that said their offices were closed on the weekends. I followed that call up with an email to make sure that my issue reached them. Lo and behold, I received a reply on Monday morning notifying me that the warranty certificate (the one others have questioned the signature line, etc. on) was actually true (a rarity in my recent experience). No fine print or red tape here - they would be more than happy to send me a replacement unit (not just a replacement element). There was a slight issue, however. I own this X-Tronic unit and the Aoyue 968 (One for work and one for home). If you were to only buy one unit I would suggest going with the X-Tronic station over the Aoyue. I felt little to no difference in operation/performance when switching between the 2 units when using both the hot air and the soldering side on both stations. The advantage the X-Tronic has over the Aoyue (aside from the X-Tronic costing a little less than the Aoyue) is the assortment of soldering tips that are sent with the unit and the 2 replacement heating elements (1 for the hot air and 1 for the soldering iron). Heating elements and soldering tips do not last forever and having the spare parts on hand will save time in the long run. The Aoyue is not sent with any spare parts and no assortment of soldering tips. Both units are sent with 4 different sizes of hot air nozzles. One thing I found that I liked better on the X-Tronic is that they use a digital display for both the hot air and soldering iron temperatures. The Aoyue uses the digital display for the hot air side only and an analog dial for the soldering iron side temperature. While this does not affect the performance I found that I preferred X-Tronic's design over the Aoyue. All in all I am very happy with the X-Tronic rework station and feel the best choice in value if you had to buy one over the other is the X-Tronic rework station. The unit is slightly cheaper than the Aoyue, but you will get the same functionality/performance of the Aoyue, a digital display for both sides (hot air/soldering iron) of the station, a nice variety of soldering iron tips for different applications, and you will be thankful that you have spare heating elements on hand when they inevitably burn out. Ive only used it about twice but im really impressed with this station (898D). Its far superior to my handheld butane solder iron or my weller 50watt simple plug in style. This thing is pretty sweet, you can select temperature for both the heatgun and solder iron, granted its in Celsius but not a huge deal. The heatgun element will only heat when its off the stand which is a nice feature, when you place it back on the stand/station it starts an auto cool down. The solder iron im pretty sure works off of inductive heating, it will digitally show you it heating up, from cold to solder temp takes maybe 30-45 seconds. When you shut it off, it auto cools down. Also there is a fan speed control for the heatgun, so you can select the temp and then how hard you want it to blow. The 11 attachment pieces includes just about everything you need for all projects, also you get 3 or 4 heatgun nozzles for different size projects. Im really quite impressed with the features you get with the price you pay. I guess the only real con is the solder iron itself could be constructed from better material but overall everything feels solid and not really cheap.
